Chiquibul-Maya Mountain Program
The Chiquibul-Maya Mountain Program is an exciting, innovative endeavor to protect the most important block of tropical forest in Belize, Central America. This block consists of an agglomeration of fourteen protected area sub-units. The initiative undertaken by a multitude of partners comprised of governmental agencies, non-governmental organizations and other civil society institutions follows one of the main recommendations of the National Protected Areas System Plan which identifies this block as one of exceptional importance where integrated management would reinforce national prominence in protected area system management at a regional scale.
The purpose of this endeavor is to develop and implement a comprehensive and integrated sustainable management program primarily for the core conservation areas of the Chiquibul-Maya Mountain [CMM] block.
The program seeks to address various management pillars: maintain the forest ecosystem; conserve biodiversity; stimulate economic alternatives and sustainable livelihoods; strengthen cross border neighbor confidence and cooperation; promote public awareness; stimulate financial sustainability; increase protection through enforcement of rules and regulations; and improve monitoring programs.
We invite you to visit us and learn more about the CMM block.
